Govindaraopet (Warangal): The Gundlavagu irrigation project, which was washed away six years ago, within one year of its construction causing huge damage, is still causing panic among the villagers in its vicinity. The project has been receiving huge inflows due to incessant rains in the agency villages in its catchment area.

As a result, water was flowing over the dam. As the project received flood waters beyond its capacity, it led to a fissure in the bund on Saturday morning hours. It might be recalled that the project was washed away on August 4, 2006 due to floods in that year. It was the first irrigation project launched as part of the Congress government’s prestigious Jala Yagnam in the united AP and also the first to be completed. Incidentally, it was the first Jala Yagnam project that was washed away.

A breech developed in the bund of Gundlavagu project at Karlapalli village in Warangal district on Saturday.

The local villagers alleged that poor design and the equally poor quality of construction works by the contractor and lack of monitoring by the concerned officials were responsible for the incident. Now after nine years, the bund of the project developed a small fissure at the ground level leading to the seepage of water.

The villagers who noticed the leakage of water from the crevice have alerted the officials and started efforts to seal it. Mahabubabad MP A Seetaram Naik, Mulug DSP Rajamahendra Naik, Irrigation Superintendent Engineer V Padma Rao, revenue divisional officer Mahender rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.

Superintendent Engineer in the Irrigation Department Padma Rao said that the fissure was identified and was sealed. The DSP Mahendra Naik led a team of police personnel sealed the seepage using grass and sand bags with the help of revenue and the local villagers.

“All these are temporary measures, we fear that the bund could be breached as the inflows are large in quantity” complained Naresh and Sudhakar of Karlapalli gram panchayat under whose limits, the project fall. --
