Nizamabad: Farmers in the district are a delighted lot as in the inflows into Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP) increased considerably, thanks to the continued rains. In the last 24 hours, 144.9 mm rainfall was recorded in the district. Nearly 1,043 cusecs water inflow came into the project.

According to the SRSP Assistant Engineer Boja Dasu, nearly 11.20 TMCFT water is reserved in the dam and the present water level is 1,057.60 meters. He said due to the rains that lashed for the last three days, nearly 1,043 cusecs floodwater flowed into the reservoir and it was good sign to the farmers and people in the season of Kharif and Godavari Pushkarams.

AE said due to a Supreme Court verdict, the Babli project gates were closed up to July 1, and no inflows should be expected from the upper Godavari river which was located in Maharashtra state, unless there were heavy floods. He said present inflow was reaching to the local catchment area of Nizamabad district.

Dasu also said the southwest monsoons were very active and it was raining heavily in Maharashtra and Karnataka. After July 1, high inflows were expected from Babli and other projects, he added. Kesava Rao, Chief Planning Officer, Nizamabad district, said nearly 144.9 mm average rainfall recorded in the district and 46.4 mm recorded in Pochampadu, 34.4 mm at Balkonda, 25.4 at Armoor, 20 mm at Nandipet and 18 mm at Makloor.

He said the last few days, good rain fall was recorded in the district and it was higher than normal rainfall. Kunta Ganga Reddy, a farmer in Yergatla village of Mothad mandal said this year the rainfall was little better comparing to last year. He expressed happiness over the inflow that started into the SRSP project. If the project reached full water level, the north Telangana farmers would get good harvests of Khariff and Rabi crops, he added.

Rajanna, another farmer of Bodepalli village of Balkonda mandal said these inflows created hopes among farmers in the SRSP catchment area and they would start sowing in this khariff season. Radhakrishna Sharma, a priest at Tadpakal temple said the Godavari Pushkarams came only once in 12 years, but the water shortage in Godavari river created tension among all devotees.
