Khammam: Finally, there seems to be a ray of hope and justice appears to be done to the displaced people of the upcoming Bhadradri Thermal Power Station (BTPS), one among the many power projects lined up by the Telangana Government to make the State a power surplus in the next few years.

The ongoing works of the coal-based BTPS (1080 MW) coming up in over 1,030 acres at Chikkudugunta village under Ramanujavaram gram panchayat in Manuguru mandal at an estimated cost of Rs 7,921 crore has been in the thick of a controversy. The displaced of Chikkudugunta and its neighbouring villages, where the thermal power plant is coming up, are up in arms against the authorities alleging irregularities in providing them compensation.

Led by the leaders of the Left Parties’, the villagers have been demanding maximum compensation in adherence to the new Land Acquisition Act. Besides, they demanded a government job to each family and proper rehabilitation measures. On the other hand, some of the villagers of Sambaigudem refused to give their land for constructing the power project, contending that land is the only source of their livelihood.

It may be mentioned here that the administration had acquired 1,030 acres from 1,029 families, out of which, 304 families have registered their names for the jobs. When the Chief Minister, K. Chandrasekhar Rao, unveiled the pylon of the project on March 28, the villagers staged a protest at the unveiling ceremony but the Chief Minister refused to respond to their pleas. A few weeks later, the evacuees obstructed the works of the power plant and even pelted stones, damaging the excavating machines.

In this backdrop, District Collector K. Ilambarthi on Friday told the TS Genco officials to provide a job to each family of the oustees. He also directed the officials to identify the qualified applicants among the displaced and ensure that they get admissions in the Industrial Training Institutes in Bhadrachalam and Kothagudem.
