The Principal Secretary assured the Gandhi Hospital Staff Union leaders that the demands of staff nurses would be examined at government level with an open mind.


Some tension prevailed during day when the police force reached the hospital to arrest the nurses who were protesting demanding that their services be regularised. The agitated nurses went to the second floor of the building and threatened to jump if police tried to arrest them.


The Director of Medical Education Dr Ramani, the Superintendent of Gandhi Hospital and doctors tried to pacify the nurses but failed. Dr Ramani then took the Gandhi Hospital Staff Union leaders and leaders of other unions like M Narasimha (AITUC), B Meghamala, B Prameela, B Indira, C Venkatesh (CITU) and B Upendra to the secretariat for the discussions with the Principal Secretary Health.


Regarding the matter of regularisation, Suresh Chanda told the leaders that it was a policy decision which the Chief Minister has to take and that he would draw his attention to the issue. Meanwhile, Suresh Chanda assured them that 13 casual leaves would be sanctioned and priority would be given to the staff nurses when ever notification for the posts was issued. Following this the nurses called off the strike.
