Hyderabad: Bringing to light a fresh case of a minor girl’s marriage to a foreign national, Hyderabad police on Sunday night foiled a bid by an Omani national to marry a minor girl in the city.

According to Rein Bazaar Inspector of Police G Ramesh, the foreigner, identified as Badar Yousuf Ali Balushi, who is on tourist visa in the country, lured the girl’s parents with money and tried to marry her. “We got a tip from the locals saying that the Omani national is trying to marry the minor girl. We arrested him and foiled his attempt,” Ramesh said.

The police caught him a few hours before the marriage in Old City. The police said Balushi, 37, was working with Musqat Municipality. He came to the city on July 18 and had been staying at a hotel in Himayatnagar. The marriage was supposed to take place on Sunday evening at the house of the 17-year-old girl who lives at Yakutpura.

Her parents had made all arrangements and Balushi arrived to her house to solemnise the marriage. Ramesh said they were waiting for the Qazi to come and perform the marriage. However, the police, following a tip-off rushed to the spot and arrested Balushi and the girl’s parents. Balushi later confessed to the police that he got in touch with the girl’s family through one of her relatives who also worked in Oman.

“On July 28 around 2 pm, Balushi, along with the mediator, Ayesha, visited the house of the victim. He paid Rs 30,000 for marriage-related expenses and promised the family that he would take the girl along with him to Oman. On July 30, Ayesha took the girl’s father to the hotel for confirmation of the marriage and fixed the marriage date as August 2,” the inspector said adding that the marriage was to be solemnised on Sunday evening at the house of the girl at Arab Galli in Yakutpura.

The mediator demanded commission/brokerage of Rs 20,000 from the victim’s parents as she mediated the marriage alliance. “Efforts are afoot to nab Ayesha who is absconding,” Ramesh said. A case under Section 354 C (A) (N), 406, 420 of the IPC, Nirbhaya Act and Section 9, 10, 11 of Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006 was registered against Balushi. “We are constantly keeping a tab on the movement of foreigners, marriage brokers and Qazis,” DCP (South) V Satyanarayana said.
