Nizamabad: There was near-shutdown in Nizamabad district in the wake of the general strike called by various trade unions to protest against Union government’s “assault on the rights of workers.”

All trades union, barring the BJP-affiliated BMU, gave a call for general strike as the Centre proposed to amend the Labour Act. The trade unions accused the government of making a bid to rob the workers of their hard-won rights. Normal life was paralysed as employees of the TSRTC, banks and privates, besides auto-rickshaw drivers, took part in the strike.

The IFTU, AITUC, INTUC and CITU leaders set fire to the effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in front of Nizamabad bus station and raised slogans against Modi government anti-labour policies. A procession was taken out from the Rajiv Gandhi auditorium to the District Collectorate. A large number of employees and workers took part in the procession.
