TRS, Cong may announce Warangal candidate today

Hyderabad: Suspense over official candidates for Warangal bypoll continues as the major political parties are still holding marathon meetings to select their candidates for the election scheduled on November 23.

While the ruling TRS is likely to announce its nominee on Friday, the Congress party is expected to reveal its candidate on the same day. However, the TDP-BJP combine is yet to decide on the candidate.

Sources said that the TRS is keen on fielding G Ravi Kumar for the seat. Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao is learnt to have asked the party leaders to take legal opinion since there may be some technical glitches in the case of Ravi Kumar.

As the Warangal Lok Sabha constituency is reserved for Scheduled Castes. Though his father belongs to backward class community, Ravi Kumar had completed his education as SC student. In this backdrop, KCR wants to seek legal opinion on whether Ravi is eligible to contest the election.

If Ravi is not qualified for the seat, alternatively it is said, the party is considering the name of Dr B Ramesh, who is the president of Telangana Government Doctors’ Association as second choice. Dr Ramesh had played a key role in the Telangana movement.

The party sources also refer the name of P Parmeshwar, who had unsuccessfully contested as BJP candidate against Kadiam Srihari, in the previous elections but later joined TRS.

However, KCR is said to be keen to select a local candidate and also prefer a person who will be fluent in Hindi and English, as the member of Lok Sabha to raise issues pertaining to the state effectively. Both Ravi Kumar and Dr Ramesh fall under the category. During the 4-hour long meeting, Rao has emphasised the need to put all differences on the backburner and work for the victory of the official candidate.

After the meeting, the TRS has resolved to authorise KCR, to take a final decision. To ensure that there are no bickerings, Rao told the party leaders that he had deliberately put on hold the process of filling up nominated posts.

He told them that since some key leaders were in the running for party ticket he decided to wait for sometime before announcing the list. He reiterated that nominated posts would be filled up with rightful mix of party loyalists and new entrants in the party soon after the Warangal bypoll.
