Hyderabad: For the 13 lakh plus people using the Gough Road, there is something to cheer about, albeit temporarily, as the local Army authority is ready to defer the closure of Army Road. This was conveyed in a meeting with Residential Welfare Associations (RWA) held on Friday. The local Army authorities had earlier said that the Gough Road would be closed from December 1.

The meeting was attended by 32 RWAs at the AOC centre. Brigadier Dalip Singh, Commandant, AOC, said that the Army would close the roads in a phased manner and had intimated the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to present a report on the plan for developing alternative roads.

“The Army is ready to extend the date of closure but the municipal body needs to come up with a concrete plan,” he added.

As per AOC Commandent, no proposals or reply to their letters were received so far from the GHMC or State Government and that they have no other way other than to follow the orders received from Ministry of Defence to close the roads in a phased manner.

Meanwhile GOC Major General Pachory wanted to get first hand information on the difficulties faced by civilians due to road closure along with the RWAs as he was new to this place and recently took charge. The Director General of Defence Estate, Sundari Pujari would be meeting Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma on issues related to Army & Cantonment lands.

B T Srinivasan, General Secretary, United Federation of Resident Welfare Associations, said, “It is high time that the GHMC comes up with a plan for alternative roads.”
