No exclusive public toilets for women in GHMC limits
Notwithstanding all the tall talk about women empowerment’s emancipation, the fact remains that there is not a single toilet which is earmarked exclusively for women in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s (GHMC) plans of bio-toilets.

There are a total of 338 public toilets under GHMC limits including 50 constructed by GHMC after formation of Telangana State but among them there is not even a single one for women according to an RTI report. Currently, the GHMC has 135 build-operate-transfer (BOT) model toilets, 103 urinals, 50 bio urinals installed under zero odour technology on BOOT concept but not even one exclusive toilet for 46 lakh women in twin cities.
Besides this, the civic body has also promised to set up 200 modern prefabricated toilet facilities out of total 1,000 in the Phase I in different parts of the city. So far they have set up 50 such toilets. According to GHMC Health and Sanitation Wing officials, there are 50 Sulabh complexes in the city limits and about 60 public toilets in cantonment area.
Commenting on no exclusive toilet for women, the GHMC officials told The Hans India that public urination has been a problem and major inconvenience in the city. They said the GHMC Health and Sanitation wing will have to take several factors into consideration before deciding to have exclusive toilets for women which includes having a women security guard at such toilets. As of now there is no proposal for constructing exclusive toilets for women according to sources.
