Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation's (GHMC) SAHAJ Mobile App to collect biometric attendance from sanitation workers has suffered a setback as the private agency, which has been managing the project, backed off due to non-payment for the cost of machines. The civic body failed to pay Rs 56 lakh for procuring about 28 Biometric Attendance System (BAS) machines.

According to the GHMC officials, the civic body procured about 28 BAS machines from a private agency and installed them in Circle 8 and Tank Bund transport office in August on a pilot basis. Sources in the civic body say that the payment was kept on hold for this very reason.

The GHMC was contemplating to make the payment after assessing the system and introducing them in all the 18 circles. The officials however admitted that BAS pilot project proved to be effective in weeding out bogus employees. The corporation managed to save about Rs 10 crore in a span of three months through the system.
