Hyderabad: Governor E S L Narasimhan on Sunday called upon the media to play the role of a constructive opposition wherein they could praise the good initiatives of the government and highlight the wrongs done by them, particularly if the welfare measures were not reaching the identified beneficiaries. He was addressing the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Press Club of Hyderabad (PCH), which he lauded for doing ‘wonderfully well all these years.’

Citing various incidents in his career, he urged the media to desist from the habit of sensationalising. In the same breadth, he wished the government to hold periodical press meetings whereupon they could discuss threadbare issues concerning the people. Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya said he would take up with the Centre the need to accord benefits to electronic media personnel like health cards and house loans, which were being extended to print media.

He said that he already wrote letters to both Telangana and AP Chief Ministers regarding benefits of media people. He pointed out that he had already written to the State government to look in this aspect. IT Minister K T Rama Rao wished the club to have many more such celebrations.

He reiterated the government’s commitment towards the betterment of the media. He spoke about the Rs 10 crore that was earmarked for the welfare of journalists, which was in addition to the double bedroom houses that had been promised.

Advisor to the State government KV Ramana Chary, Chairman of PCH Allam Narayana and I&PR Commissioner Navin Mittal also spoke on the occasion, which was followed by a variety of entertainment show that drew praises by the audience at Ravindra Bharati.
