Khammam: With the Corporation elections approaching fast, the political parties in the district are gearing up to win the first Mayor seat and leave their mark on Khammam Municipal Corporation.

Khammam city was upgraded into Corporation after merging nine village panchayats and as per the rules and regulations of Town and Country Planning Department, Khammam city was divided into 50 divisions in anti-clock wise direction, starting from Kaikondaigudem as the first and Ramannapeta as the last division.

About 2,43,760 voters of the 50 divisions are going to decide the fate of the various political parties in the ensuing Corporation elections. Out of the total population, there are 1,20,069 male voters while 1,23,661 are female and about 30 voters are trans-genders.

Since the Mayor seat and the first division are reserved for ST General, winning the first division has become prestigious for all the political parties in the district.

The first division, Kaikondaigudem was under Village Panchayat earlier. Rama Raju of Congress was the last sarpanch from this village. Nearly 3,102 voters are present in this division, which is reserved for ST General category.

The division is lagging behind in terms of development without proper roads and drains. Scarcity of drinking water is acute here. Several migrant labour were settled here since there are more number of granite factories here. This division is also famous for the Shivalayam, which almost 100 years old and spread in a sprawling area of 12 acres.

All eyes are focussed on winning this division since it is very near to Khammam city, besides the Mayor seat is also reserved for ST General category. The TRS, Congress, YSRCP and CPM are independently launching their candidates to contest the elections without the support from other parties. Whereas the TDP with the support of BJP and CPI with the support of a few parties which would join them, are trying to field their contestants to give a strong fight.

The TRS division leader S Upendar said the main agenda of their party was to solve all the problems pertaining to the division. All the eligible poor people in the division will be allotted houses and plots, he assured.

CPM division leader G Pentya criticised that several governments have changed but not the condition of the division. It was only CPM which can fight on the public issues and try to solve the problems, he said.

Congress division leader N Upendar said that they had developed the division with the available funds when it was under Village Panchayat. He promised to develop it further by laying proper roads and drains along with providing drinking water facility for the people in the division.
