Warangal: The road leading to Konda couple’s residence in Ram Nagar was abuzz with hectic political activity on Tuesday with a sizable number of people, mostly aspiring for TRS ticket to contest in the election to the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC). The surprise pack among them was a group of transgender seeking an opportunity to contest in the election to the civic body.

The group led by Laila met MLC Konda Muralidhar Rao and urged him to give at least one ticket to contest in the polls. They said the MLC to allot the 23rd division or 20th division where their population was more. They claimed that their community has about 400 votes in 23rd division which falls under Warangal East constituency. It may be mentioned here that Konda Surekha is the MLA of Warangal East constituency.

Later speaking to The Hans India, Laila, who led the eunuchs to the MLC, said: “The MLC has promised us to take our representation to the notice of the TRS party bigwigs. He also promised to pursue the party high command to allot a nominated post for one of us.” Expressing hope that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao would respond to their demand in a positive manner, she strengthened their claim for representation in the civic body, stating that eunuchs have made it to public offices in the recent past.

It may be mentioned here that 35-year-old Maddu Kinnar has become the first transgender Mayor in the country when she defeated BJP candidate in Raigarh in Chhattisgarh in 2015. Prior to it, Shabnam Mausi is the first Indian transgender to be elected to public office. She was elected to Madhya Pradesh Assembly from Sohagpur constituency.
