Parigi (Ranga Reddy): The sinking of borewells is going on unabated in the mandal despite a ban on it following a steep decline in the groundwater table, which is largely attributed to lack of proper rains for the past three years. The field level officials of the Ground Water Department have failed to implement the district Collector’s ban order on the sinking of new borewells.

The indiscriminate sinking of borewells is ubiquitous across the mandal. The desperation of small and marginal farmers to irrigate their crops with groundwater can be understood. But it is the responsibility of the officials to prevent farmers from sinking borewells to greater depths by educating them on the decline in the groundwater table.

Many farmers became bankrupt after digging borewells to greater depths. There were instances where water was not struck even at 1,000 feet. The Ground Water Department officials seem to be indifferent to the plight of farmers who failed to strike water even after sinking borewells to greater depths and incurring huge costs.

There is an apprehension that the debt-ridden farmers may resort to the extreme step of ending their lives lest they are unable to repay the debts. Superstitions among farmers and lack of scientific approach in the sinking of borewells can also be blamed for the present crisis. A majority of farmers do not consult a geologist before sinking a borewell.

They are largely driven by blind beliefs which ultimately lead to failure. In some cases, water was not struck even at the place suggested by a geologist due to the rapid decline in the groundwater table. In the present scenario, the Ground Water Department officials need to focus on educating farmers on the water table to protect them from becoming bankrupt by taking up unsuccessful ventures.
