Natural springs at forest yielding irrigation water
In these drought days, three huge natural springs and several smaller ones lying between Chellampet and Talamala Girijan villages in the Luxettipet mandal forest area, are not only yielding irrigation water but also helping animals quench their thirst. Water from the springs which thrive throughout the year and take the form of a stream is filling many tanks.

The stream water flows a distance of 15 km and joins Godavari at Gullakota village. During Nizam’s regime, farmers of the area built a structure across the stream near Chellampet and diverted the water through a canal to seven smaller streams in the mandal. The water used to reach two streams in Chellampet, besides those in Chandaram, Gampalapalli, Itikyala, Venkatraopet and Kommugudam.
Even now these streams help raise every year summer crops in about 10,000 acres, including paddy in about 4,000 acres, besides maize. Also farmers get relief with water from the Kadem project and Gudem, Godavari lift irrigation schemes reaching the streams. This water provides relief to animals during summer.
The structure across the stream is also helping in making the environment greener. Residents of adjoining villages prefer the spot to have their ‘Vanabojanam’ gatherings. Also, there is the Chinnayyagutta atop which Girijan God Chinnayya has his temple. It is visited by tribals and farmers for keeping their vows, thus making the area a beehive of activity. Ten years back an anicut was built across the stream close to the structure linking it to the main Kadem project canal.
