Hyderabad: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has urged the Chief Election Commissioner not to grant permission to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) for conducting plenary on April 27 in Khammam to ensure free and fair poll in Palair Assembly seat on May 16.

TPCC official spokespersons B Kamalakar Rao and G Niranjan addressed a letter to the CEC to this effect on Thursday. In the letter, the TPCC said the Election Commission of India had issued schedule for the bye-elections to Palair Assembly segment in Khammam district of Telangana State on April 18, which fell vacant with the death of Ramreddy Venkat Reddy, a Congress MLA.

The model code of conduct had come into force with the announcement of the schedule and no party was entitled to take undue advantage and influence the voters on one pretext or other, the leaders said. “The TRS intended to organise the party’s plenary session in Khammam on April 27 with the sole intention to influence voters.

They will dump publicity material, hoardings, cutouts and flags in the name of the plenary and use official machinery for the purpose. During Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation elections held in February 2016, they misused official machinery and the entire city was flooded with TRS publicly material without giving any scope to other party publicity material”, they added.

Meanwhile, TPCC has urged the Chief Election Commissioner to direct the authorities concerned to use ballot papers or EVMs with VVPAT system in the bye-elections to be held for Palair. Kamalakar Rao and G Niranjan, in their letter to the CEC, said there was scope of tampering with EVMs by the ruling party and urged the Election Commission to use ballot papers or EVMs with VVPATs to uphold faith of people in electioneering process.

In the recent elections, there were several complaints of tempering with EVMs and candidates expressed shock as they got less number of votes than their own family members’ votes in certain polling booths.
