Hyderabad: The State government has brought into force a new system to protect temple lands from encroachments. All the lands taken over by the temple trusts are being transferred in the name of presiding deities to the respective temples in the State.
State Endowments department in coordination with Revenue and Registration departments began the exercise recently. According to official records nearly one lakh acres of land was registered in the name of temple trusts and managements in all 10 districts of the State.
About 10,000 acres was encroached in the last five decades in the State. Nearly 12,500 temples were being maintained by the Endowments department. According to sources, all the trusts, societies and individuals guarding the temple lands were asked to surrender the land pattas registered in their names to the Endowments department.
Endowments Minister A Indrakaran Reddy said that the officials concerned would sign the registration documents on behalf of the deities, which would help in stopping the transfer the lands. The Minister said that the government took up the new initiative to protect the lands from encroachments. It would also help the officials to fight against encroachments in the courts, when the issue is raised.
At present, the trusts are dealing with illegal occupation of lands in the courts. Once the registration is done in the name of gods, the officials would take over the land ownership documents and submit them in the court in case any disputes arouse in the courts, the Minister said.
The verification of ownership of encroached lands was also taken up with the help of Revenue department. The government is serious to reclaim all the occupied lands and register them on god’s name. District Collectors were also instructed to conduct a fresh survey on temple lands.
