Khammam: Come Monday, Palair will become the first constituency in Telangana State to use Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines along with the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

Albeit, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has used VVPAT machines first time on pilot basis in Khammam Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections held in March, this is the first time that the high-tech voter recording system is being used comprehensively in an election to the Assembly constituency in the State.

It may be mentioned here that when a vote is cast, VVPAT a printer-like apparatus linked to the EVMs generates a receipt showing the serial number, name and symbol of the chosen candidate. The printout can only be seen through a glass window. However, the voter cannot take home the printout.

For the by-poll, as many as 243 EVMs fitted with VVPAT machines are being deployed. During the KMC polls, 40 VVPAT machines were used on a trial basis.

While electioneering is at its peak across Palair Assembly constituency ahead of May 16 polling, the district administration is braced for the challenge of ensuring free and fair election, has initiated a slew of measures to encourage the voters to exercise their franchise and teaching them the value of vote.

The administration on Friday pressed kala jatha teams into service to familiarise political parties and electorate with the functioning of the VVPAT machines. This apart, the authorities also pressed into service vehicles equipped with LED screens as part of digital campaign to spread awareness on voting rights.
