Kalaburagi: Auto- rickshaw travel in the city will cost more for single commuters as the government has decided to install digital meters on all city based autos to avoid fraud and maintain transparent fares.

The Transport department has directed the auto drivers to install digital meters by May 31. Those who fail to comply will be fined. The auto rickshaw fare in the city ranges from Rs. 15 to 30 during the day while night passengers are charged Rs. 50 to 100, for five to six kilometers.

After the installation of digital meters, a single commuter will have to shell out a minimum fare of Rs 25 per 2 kilometers and Rs 13 for every subsequent kilometer. The new fare structure will come into effect from June 1.

As of now, auto -rickshaw drivers are charging Rs 15 for a single person for two to three kilometres. They also carry additional passengers and make a profit.

The installation of digital meters means that a single commuter will now have to pay full charge. Nearly, 3000 drivers plying their vehicles in the city will have to reset their meters by May 31.
