Mahabubabad (Warangal): A massive agitation was staged here on Saturday, protesting against the alleged land grabbing by the ruling TRS MLA, B Shanker Naik. Different political parties have joined hands to fight against the MLA, who was accused of threatening a farmer to give up his land compelling him to attempt suicide.

Oppn parties stage dharna demanding action against the MLA

CPI, CPM, Congress and TDP leaders along with the victim’s son, B Ekambaram staged dharna at Mahabubabad RDO office. In a memorandum signed by the farmer, B Komaramallu, and submitted to RDO K Bhasker Rao, it was said that the farmer owns a farm land with an extent of 1.10 acres under survey No: 137/24B of Anantharam village of Mahabubabad mandal registered on his son’s name.

The farmer has also attached the images of damage caused by the MLA to chilli crop in the field. In January 2016, the MLA went to the field and questioned the farmer why he was cultivating the land and demanded to quit the land. Later in February 2016, he again came to the farmer seeking to leave a portion of the land to serve as way to reach a nearby hillock to organise Sevalal jatara.

“When I denied doing so, Shanker Naik threatened me that I would be sent to jail by booking under SC/ST atrocity case. After sometime the MLA encroached half acre of land by destroying mirchi crop and dug up two bores for his needs,” the farmer alleged. After that the MLA followers frequently bullied the farmer to sell the land to the MLA for a pittance.

A person called Balram went to Komaramallu’s residence in May and forcibly took away the land pahani papers. Unable to tolerate the harassment by MLA and his followers, the farmer has on Thursday attempted suicide by consuming poison and was admitted to Mahabubabad area hospital where he was recovering.

CPM leaders S Somaiah and S Srinivas, CPI leaders Brahmanapalli Raju and Perugu Kumar, TDP leaders Bhukya Sunitha and Rama Chandraiah, the town municipality chairperson Bhukya Uma Naik and ZP floor leader M Pratap Reddy of Congress have taken in the agitation along with several people’s organisations.

The leaders, addressing the gathering, have demanded Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to pay attention to the land encroachments of his party MLA and initiate action against him. They demanded the police arrest of the MLA for forcing Komaramallu to attempt suicide. There were several instances where the MLA committed land grabbing by threatening innocent people, they complained. If the CM fails to act against the MLA the agitations would be intensified, they cautioned.
