Warangal: Building a society sans atrocities against women is the need of the hour, said German-based Karl Kübel Foundation (KKS) monitoring officer K Suhas Nair.

Everyday large numbers of women are becoming victims of dowry deaths, domestic violence, rape, cheating in the name of love.

There are many laws and acts like Domestic Violence Act and Nirbhaya Act meant to safeguard women’s interests but they are not preventing atrocities against women, he said.

Nair attended Grama Rakshaka Dala Committee meeting at Pothrajupalli of Geesukonda mandal in Warangal district on Monday.

The committees are set up by Sarvodaya Youth Organisation (SYO) in association with the KKS and German Federal Ministry for Economic Development. The members in the society should change their attitude towards women’s folk. In order to bring the change, the governments and NGOs should work collectively, he suggested.

The SYO secretary, P Damodar addressing the gathering informed that during the past 20 months 2,284 domestic dispute and violence cases have been registered with the organisation. 1,804 cases are resolved, FIRs are registered in 50 cases and 430 cases are pending.

The organisation has been striving to address women’s issues. Women should come together whenever they find women subjected to atrocities. Addiction to alcohol in the rural parts has become the root cause of violence against women, he explained.

The members of Grama Rakshaka Committees of Pothrajupalli, Machhapur, Bodduchintalapalli and Vasanthapur have explained their measures taken up to create awareness among women and extending financial assistance to take up livelihood activities. The SYO project manager Vijay Moses, gender expert V Indira and others were present.
