Hyderabad: The Telangana transport department is contemplating to make it mandatory for driving licence applicants to mention their blood group in the application forms. The move comes after Governor E S L Narasimhan visited the RTA office at Khairatabad last week and was amused that such an important aspect like details of the blood group was mentioned in the optional form.

He suggested to the officials to ensure that details of the blood group of every individual are mentioned in their respective driving licence. As per the transport department’s application format Form 1-A, candidates earlier had the option to fill up details of the blood group. Because of this, an applicant either used to provide details or ignore it.

The officials now are contemplating to change this optional section into mandatory one. “Now every applicant has to mention his/ her blood group on the application form,” said Joint Transport Commissioner B Venkateshwarlu.

The Governor said that mentioning about the blood group in the driving licences would ensure the doctors get clear idea about the blood group in case of accidents. “It would be a life saving initiative,” he said. The official said that if a person is injured in a road accident and is in urgent need of blood, it becomes easy for doctors to identify the blood group necessary from the driver’s licence of the victim
