Khammam: Even though the studies show that there is a preponderance of evidence that wearing helmets saves lives of two-wheeler riders at least by 20 to 30 per cent, people continue to come up with lame excuses to defend themselves for not using the helmets.

June 30 was the deadline the traffic authorities set for the motorists in Khammam district to change their own accord and fall in line by wearing helmets.

Umpteen numbers of awareness drives and pep talks to two-wheeler drivers citing the importance of using helmets preceded before the traffic authorities finally wielding the whip in the district making use of headgear is compulsory. The efforts of the traffic wing didn’t go waste as an RTC driver and a teacher in the last couple of days had a providential escape in two separate accidents. Thanks to the helmet awareness drive conducted by the authorities for the last few weeks.

Burri Adinarayana, working as a RTC driver with the Khammam depot, who is being treated in a hospital here, said: “I am lucky to escape with injuries. Though the helmet I wore was broken when I fell on the bypass road, it saved me from getting fatal head injury.”
‘The other to escape from the fatal injuries was Nallamothu Srinivasa Rao, a teacher.

He too was wearing a helmet when the mishap took place, traffic city circle inspector P Naresh Reddy said, who has been campaigning tirelessly for the use of headgear. No less 500-odd bikes led by the traffic authorities were out on the streets crisscrossing
all the main thoroughfares of the city on Friday giving a flat out final call for the two-wheeler riders if they were of the opinion they can escape the helmet rule.

The highlight of the bike rally is the participation of a cross section of people, including officials, students, members of cine heroes’ associations etc.

After the rally, Naresh Reddy said: “A fine of Rs 1,000 will be imposed in about 10 days if the riders fail to wear helmet. As o now, 50 per cent of the riders are already started using helmet due to our campaign. Meanwhile, the offenders will
be given a couple of hours of counseling."
