Hyderabad: The Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital authorities had stopped surgeries from July 1 but kept everyone in the dark. Thanks to a relative of a PG doctor at the hospital who told about the callous attitude of the medical staff that the issue came to light.

On condition of anonymity, the student said that the senior doctors kept telling them not to make an issue and that everything would calm down. S Raju, son of patient Nukkalatalli who is in danger of losing her eye-sight said, “Not a single doctor spoke to us and most of the time there was no doctor available.

I had no clue why so many operations were being performed on my mother. After four days, they tell us that she may not be able to see in the future.” Eleven out of the 13 patients are above 60 years of age and mostly from poor backgrounds. Raju says that he has come from Visakhapatnam and it was difficult for him to stay for long in Hyderabad.

One patient Satyanarayana who stays nearby was told by the medical authorities to stay at home and he was not available at the hospital. G Anuradha, a relative says, “Standard procedures were not followed and there was no case sheets.”

About 50 cataract surgeries are performed every day but proper sterilisation is not done. Though the hospital has a capacity of 500 beds, the occupancy rate is negligible.
