Khammam: Faulting the Telangana government for renaming the Indira Sagar and Rajiv Sagar Lift Irrigation projects, the Congress Deputy Floor Leader in the Council Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy staged a dharna near Collectorate here on Wednesday.

Speaking at the protest, Reddy questioned the rationale behind changing the names of Irrigation projects named after former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.

“It was totally un-called for,” he asserted, demanding the State government to justify the change in the names of the projects.

The government should open its eyes and recognise the services of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s cause.

He demanded the government to revive the shelved Indira Sagar irrigation project at Rudramkota in Velairpadu mandal (in West Godavari district) to utilise the waters of Godavari and Sabari rivers.

By ignoring the Indira Sagar project, the TRS government made a grave injustice to Khammam district.

The project would have irrigated at least 1.20 lakh acres in the district, he said. This apart, Telangana would lose its rightful share in Sabari waters and surplus waters of Kinnerasani.

He threatened that Congress would launch agitations if the government fails to address the issues faced by the farmers.

Reddy called off the protest accepting lemon juice offered by the TPCC Working President Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka in the evening.

Earlier, DCC president Aitham Satyam launched the one-day protest of Reddy. Former ministers Vanama Venkateswar Rao and Sambhani Chandrasekhar, DCC general secretary P Srinivas Reddy, TPCC official spokesperson Katla Ranga Rao and Youth Congress State secretary R Manohar Naidu were among others present at the protest.
