According to a senior official in the corporation, the passengers would be given a prepaid smart card. All that a passenger needs to do is to swipe the card and fill the destination details. The journey fare would be debited after the card is swiped. The swiping facility would be incorporated by upgrading the existing TIMs (Ticket Issuing Machines) so that the passengers can use card or cash.
Hyderabad: The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) is planning to introduce smart card system for the benefit of passengers who travel by long distance buses. The corporation officials have initiated talks with some debit and credit card companies for the technical knowhow to operate the system. Officials feel that this initiative would help overcoming the ‘change’ problem while issuing tickets besides avoiding fake or spoiled currency notes. Officials said, “It has come to our notice that passengers indulge in arguments with the conductor over change.
The conductor too has no option but to ask for change,” said a senior official. This would also help control printing of tickets as the transaction was taken up in electronic format, added the official.
Initially, to encourage passengers to take the card, there would be discounts offers, the sources said.In most of the major cities abroad, the smart card is used in the public transport system. The smart card system is in place in cities like Melbourne, Sydney, Johannesburg, and in the USA, Russia and other countries.
The smart card is being used in Metro Rail stations in Delhi, Chennai and Mumbai. The Hyderabad Metro Rail is also contemplating to go in for the smart card system to tackle the hassles of issuing tickets manually.
According to the officials, about two to three companies have come forward and also gave a PowerPoint Presentation. The TSRTC was examining the proposals and a decision would be taken in this regard soon, the sources added.
