Hyderabad: Justice M S Ramachandra Rao of the High Court at Hyderabad on Tuesday directed the Telangana State Public Prosecutor to assist the court in a case of road accident on account of drink-driving that resulted in the incapacitation of a retired Captain. The judge was dealing with a petition filed by Dr T Bhaskar, son of Captain T Kameswara Rao, who was injured severely in the accident at Samshabad airport flyover on July 16.

According to the petitioner, Dr Sidhartha Darapuneni, working with Century Super Speciality Hospitals at Road No 12, Banjara Hills, was the one who was driving the Honda City that caused the accident.

In his complaint, the petitioner alleged that the doctor was with an air hostess of Indigo airlines and both of them were in a visibly drunken state.

Even the breath analysis done on the spot by the police had revealed that the doctor’s blood contained huge levels of alcohol way beyond the permissible limits, the petitioner submitted. The police merely booked him under light sections and let him off after showing his arrest and granting bail in the station itself.

S Vani, counsel for the petitioner, pointed out that drink-driving by anyone was a serious issue and needed to be tackled with the safety of people on roads. She prayed the court to send a strong message to the people that they would face severe consequences if they indulged in drink-driving.

She sought a direction to police to change the sections of law from IPC 337 to IPC 326 or any other stringent section which the court deemed fit in the circumstances of the case.

The judge pointed out that the matter required a detailed hearing and sought the assistance of the Public Prosecutor in view of the importance of the contentions raised by the petitioner. The matter will be taken up on September 15.
