Hyderabad: All the 16,560 Fair Price Shops across Telangana will be getting upgraded version of ePOS by next month. The tender process was completed by Civil Supplies Department on Saturday. According to the department officials, the latest ePOS machines are provided with advanced features and at a relatively low price, owing to the transparent mechanism adopted during the tender process.

A committee led by Civil Supplies Commissioner C V Anand finalised the tenders on Saturday, where Oasys Cybernetics Pvt Ltd won the bidding process. Sandip Kumar Sultania, Secretary, Finance Department, V Prem Chand, Managing Director, APTC and other members of the committee also participated in the last meeting held on Saturday night and finalised the process.

Currently, ePOS units are being used in the FPSs in Greater Hyderabad for the implementation of PDS, but these machines only recognise the finger prints of beneficiaries. However, it was decided to upgrade the latest machines with iris scanner, electronic weighing machine, swiping Aadhaar Enabled System (AEPAS) and audio/voice features. For conducting banking operations through FPSs, micro ATMs would be positioned suitably and the dealer of FPS would work as ‘Business Correspondent’, in addition to his existing PDS responsibilities.

Anand said in the biometric process, often problems were cropping up whenever finger prints were hazy. So to get over it, iris was introduced and similarly voice over system would be of much help to the rural folk and particularly to the illiterate. On the whole, with the introduction of ePOS in all the 16,560 FPSs, every year approximately 15-20 percent would be saved to the exchequer, which means an amount of Rs 750-800 crore, said Anand.

To curb irregularities in FPSs, ePOS machines have already been introduced in 1,545 FPSs spread in the nine circles of Hyderabad and 3 circles of RR Dists from March, 2016.
