Hyderabad: In an effort to get closer to the people in the State, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao formally launch ‘Janahita’, a programme aimed at interacting with a cross section of people on February 17 which happens to be his birthday.

The first meeting of Janahita will be with the family members of deceased journalists wherein the Chief Minister would hear their woes and take measures to address their grievances.

The Chief Minister reviewed the welfare activities for the journalists at Pragathi Bhavan on Tuesday and announced that the government would allocate Rs 10 crore every year for journalists’ welfare. Besides helping the families of journalists who died, help would also be given to those who fall sick.

Chandrashekar Rao said in the last two budgets, the government had allocated Rs 10 crore each. “We will also allocate Rs 10 crore in the coming budget. With this money, we will take up welfare programmes for journalists through the Press Academy.

We will give Rs 1 lakh each to the families of journalists who died and their family members will get a pension of Rs 3,000 per month for five years. If they have children studying below 10th standard, we will give Rs 1,000 to two children of each family per month.

If the children of the journalists are studying abroad, Overseas Scholarship will be given to them. We will also give assistance to journalists pursuing courses abroad,” said the Chief Minister. The Chief Minister has entrusted the job of identifying house sites for journalists in Hyderabad to Minister K T Rama Rao.

Press Academy chairman Allam Narayana and other journalists thanked the Chief Minister for taking measures for the welfare of the journalists.
