Hyderabad: The MIM on Monday expressed serious concern over mounting public debt which is slated to soar from Rs 83,846 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 1.4 lakh crore by the end of next financial year (2017-18).

MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi said the presentation of budget coincided with the completion of 33 months of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government in the new State.

However, he said there had been only a marginal increase of 4 percent in the allocations for minorities’ welfare from Rs 1,204 crore to Rs 1,249 crore. This is despite the fact that the government had decided to open 130 more minorities’ residential schools, in addition to the existing 71 schools, in the ensuing year.

“We welcome the government’s decision to increase the assistance under Shaadi Mubarak and Kalyana Lakshmi from Rs 51,000 to Rs 75,116,” he said. Akbaruddin also welcomed allocation of Rs 200 crore for Osmania University for organising its centenary celebrations and construction of centenary block.

He also lauded the decision of the government for providing assistance of Rs 1,000 crore to GHMC and for taking up a scheme for development of Musi riverfront with an outlay of Rs 350 crore.
