Hyderabad: The 10th schedule stand-alone institute Nehru Centenary Tribal Museum (NCTM) fails to give due representation to the Tribes belonging to Telangana State.

Highlights:

  • Tribal Museum in Masab Tank functions under Tribal Cultural Research and Training Authority (TCR & TA). It as established in 2003.
  • It has a library with 15, 121 books and 18 Journals
  • Wall paintings and arts are put on display

The museum can be considered as a tribute to the Tribal culture in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana; but most of the artefacts, huts and other articles put on display belong to AP Tribals.

The museum has the representation of 10 Tribal communities including their huts, ornaments, utensils, tools and dressing patterns. Tribes like Bagatha, Savara, Porja and Yanadi are a few belongings and artefacts are displayed in the
museum.

There are 40 listed Tribes in AP and Telangana. In Telangana, there are 33 Tribes spread across the State of which 13 Tribes are considered to be major ones. A few Tribes are common in both the States. Tribes like Yerukala are found in AP and in Telangana. However, the number of Telangana Tribes is very less.

Chenchus, Koyas, Bhil and few others belong to Telangana region. Though most of the artefacts in the Museum are real, few were especially crafted by the respective Tribal artists and artisans. The museum encompasses the artefacts that are real and were in use of Tribals once.

The history, culture, beliefs and the entire lifestyle of different Tribes from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana has been put on display in this two-storey building. Museum Curator Devenapally Satyanarayana said that efforts were on to give representation to all the Tribes in the both Telugu states.

We are trying to develop this museum into a place of comprehensive information centre of different tribes in the area”,
he said.Museum has photo gallery, Artisan Gallery, Traditional Panchayat, Information Gallery (for scholars) and audio-visual section for displaying documentaries on Tribals, he added.
