Hyderabad: Minister for Road and Buildings Tummala Nageswara Rao pulled up officials of the Department for the slow pace of road development works in the State. Reviewing the progress made regarding the development works of 460 km stretch of roads for which the Center had given its approval at an estimated cost of Rs 8,000 crore here on Friday, the Minister also expressed his disappointment to the officials of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

The Minister said that the Center had given its approval to develop five roads between Sanga Reddy-Nanded- Akola, Jagityal-Karimnagar-Warangal, Kodada-Khammam, Suraypet-Khammam and Mancherial –Chandrapur. And, the roads had been handed over to the NHAI for their development but still there was delay , he lamented.

However, delay in the name of preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) besides land acquisition hit the objective of completing the road development works within the time lines fixed. It was against this backdrop that the minister had directed the district collectors concerned to come up with land acquisition plan scheduled within 15 days and start the process of acquiring lands where the notification had already been issued for acquisition.

Taking a dig at the officials concerned for not making any progress in identifying the stretches where by-pass roads are needed, he directed them to step up supervision over consulting agencies for early completion of works assigned to them.
Also, he asked them to include road safety measures in the development plans to prevent accidents.

The NHAI officials said that the NHAI would not provide for by-passes from the towns as a matter of policy. And, the estimates had been prepared keeping in view the optimum usage of the existing roads taking into consideration the funds and minimal land acquisition.
