Hyderabad: Fate of affiliation to Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) of about 80 private junior colleges is hanging in balance as they were unable to fulfil the conditions stipulated by the government.

The time for submitting applications for affiliation will end on September 21 and these colleges are yet to submit the required documents to get affiliation. As many as 10,000 students would face problems in writing the annual exam in this academic year if these colleges are denied affiliation.

The BIE has made affiliation mandatory in every academic year for all private junior colleges in the State from this academic year. Students of the colleges which do not have affiliation would not be allowed to write annual exams.
Till the last academic year, the BIE had been allowing the students of private colleges to write annual exams whether the colleges had affiliation or not, which led to several irregularities.

Taking the laxity of the BIE as an advantage, many private colleges did not care to provide required amenities to students leading to proliferation of private junior colleges all over the State. These colleges have been taking away students from the government colleges.

The BIE stipulated that the private colleges should have their own premises or lands and buildings taken on long term lease to have affiliation. They should pay corpus fund to the board according to their strength.

Many private colleges have not been following these rules and are running the colleges on premises which have been taken on lease for a short term and have not been paying the corpus fund.

As the BIE made affiliation mandatory, several colleges, which have not followed the rules, fulfilled the conditions and applied for affiliation this academic year. After scrutiny, the BIE found that about 372 colleges did not submit the required documents and decided not to give affiliation to them.
