Hyderabad: State Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister Jupalli Krishna Rao on Saturday appealed to the Centre to immediately release Rs 1,000 crore for Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MGNREGS) Scheme. In a letter addressed to Union Panchayat Raj Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, the Minister said the delay in the release of funds has been hampering the progress of MGNREG works in the State.

Krishna Rao asked the Union Minister for the immediate release of Rs 500 crore towards wages and an equal amount to meet material component of the scheme. Krishna Rao said the State government has been implementing the MGNREG works in a big way in 8,517 villages of 30 districts in the State. Nearly 30.4 lakh people had enrolled in 9.62 crore man-days.

However, for the current financial year, the Centre was yet to release Rs 250 crore towards wages and Rs 135 crore for material component. Delay in the release of funds would exercise an adverse impact on the implementation of works, Krishna Rao, he said.
