Hyderabad: The city police on Wednesday arrested eight foreign nationals and three qazis on charges of human trafficking and marriage of minor girls. The arrested include five Omani and three Qatari nationals. The arrests were made following the investigations in the case of a 16-year-old girl from the Old City of Hyderabad being married off to a 64-year-old Omani national.

According to the police, the chief qazi from Mumbai Farid Ahmed Khan indulged in trafficking of the minor girl to Oman. The qazi prepared a forged nikahnama and provided a forged marriage certificate with the stamping of Oman Embassy, the police said. Apart from him, the other qazi’s apprehended were Habeeb Ali and Ali Abdullah.

It may be mentioned here that the incident of ‘child marriage’ was reported on August 17 and the city police took up the investigation after forming teams. During the probe, it was found that these illegal marriages with Shiekhs are widespread with a strong network of brokers, hotel managements and qazis.

“The police have opened suspect sheets against 38 local brokers, four lodge owners and qazis who are resorting to illegal activities and defaming the name of their noble profession and damaging the society. Police teams including women constables will go and monitor their activities constantly,” City Police Commissioner M Mahender Reddy said.

The Commissioner said all the brokers, suspected lodges or guest houses, offices of suspected qazis and other identified places and persons are being geo-tagged with coordinates (longitudes and latitudes). After geo-tagging, Blue Colts teams, patrol cars and other police teams would continue to monitor their activities.

The accused foreign nationals were identified as Al Mayahi Habib Ali Issa, Al Salhi Talib Humeid Ali, Al Ubaidani Juma Shinoon Sulaiman, Al Salehi Nasser Khalifa Hamed, Al Qasimi Hassan Mazaaul Mohammed (Sultanate of Oman), Omer Mohammed Seraj Abdal Rahman, Hamad Jabir O Al-Kuwari and Safeldin Mohamed Mohamednour Salih (Qatar).

The Commissioner suggested that the Minority Welfare Department follow guidelines to curb child marriages. He said the foreigner must produce NOC from his country, gap between husband and wife should not be more than 10 years and the foreign national should also take into confidence the local police before marriage.

“A face-to-face programme between the victims of such marriages and Minorities Welfare Department is being planned to help the government machinery understand the ground situation,” he added.
