Secunderabad: While one flips the pages of history or a book on a historical city, what one gets to read may be far from reality as the present condition of the locality might have metamorphosed into something unthinkable, thanks to institutional callousness and insensitivity of public in general.

This is clearly reflected in the poor condition of a road near Secunderabad, behind bus No 16 stop and adjacent to Srikara Hospital. A local fruit vendor told The Hans India, “People of this area come and dump garbage in this ground. The smell has been giving me nightmares, whenever I come here.” Ramu, a local shop owner said, “It is horrifying during rainy season. People use it as urinals and mosquitoes and flies which breed here are a complete source of nuisance.”

A local resident told The Hans India, “Vagabonds and goons of this area take undue advantage of this garbage and go behind and have drugs there.” Harish, the Public Relations Officer of Srikara Hospital, says, “We have made a number of complaints to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) authorities. They come once a week and clean only a part of it and go away. Earlier, there were some dustbins, now ever since the construction of Metro has started, they have removed them too.”

Deputy Commissioner of GHMC Shailaja said, “We shall take action to clean up the place. Very soon, I am going to deploy my team in that area to ensure the hygiene of the city is maintained.” Venkat Ramana, Health Officer, said, “We are committed to the cause of spreading ‘Swachh’ Abhiyaan started by our Prime Minister and we will make sure goodness prevails in the city.”
