Hyderabad: The ongoing battle between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh government over water sharing got further aggravated after Telangana government lodged a complaint with Krishna River Water Management Board (KRMB). Telangana State government, in their complaint, alleged that the neighbouring State was tampering with the telemetry machines installed at Pothireddypadu Head Regulator in Kurnool district.

The Telangana Irrigation officials, who visited Pothireddypadu recently to study the recordings in the telemetry system, alerted the government immediately, after which the government wrote a letter to the KRMB Chairman Sahu and Member Secretary Sameer Chatterjee.

In the letter, the Telangana government demanded that the KRMB take immediate action against Andhra Pradesh government for tampering the machines in collusion with the private agency Mechactronics Systems Private Limited, which was entrusted with the maintenance.

Following the instructions of Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao, Special Chief Secretary S K Joshi and Engineer-in-Chief C Muralidhar spoke to KRMB officials on phone. In a quick response, the board called for a meeting on October 29 with Andhra Pradesh and Telangana officials in Hyderabad. The Minister also held an emergency meeting with top officials of the State Irrigation Department and reviewed the situation.

Irrigation officials said the Telangana engineers studied the recordings with regard to water release from the head regulator and compared the reports of the last month and the present month. Shockingly, the quantum of release of water was less this month when compared to August. The agency wiped out all the earlier calibrated recorded data and the new data was loaded in the system.

In the letter, the Engineer-in-Chief informed the KRMB, “that the real time calibrated data made available in the board site since September 22 had fairly tallied with the manual discharge calculated with the orifice formula.

Subsequently, on September 24, the under-reporting of discharge is continued which is 12,026 cusecs as per calibrated telemetry figure against the reported manual figure of 10,500 cusecs which is about 15 per cent.” The official requested the board to take a serious view on the matter and initiate suitable action immediately to avoid such unwarranted actions.

Recently, Telangana government lodged a complaint against Andhra Pradesh for the release of water from Pothireddypadu without any allocations by the KRMB. On the insistence of the Telangana government, KRMB allocated 5 TMC of water to the head regulator.
