Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has decided to impose heavy fines on commercial establishments which have been using plastic bags with below 50 microns from October 2. The civic body has decided to deploy 200 volunteers in this regard Stating that the civic body would severely deal with violators, the City mayor Bonthu Rammohan said, ``It has also been observed that these plastic bags are being thrown in open nalas. Nearly 70 per cent of blockades in the nalas are caused by plastic waste. The GHMC is planning to depute 200 volunteers for controlling the usage of plastic bags below 50 microns.”

The civic body will conduct a comprehensive drive on environmental hazards caused by the usage of plastic bags and will impose penalties from today (Oct 2). Those organising events in open spaces that involves food or multilayered packaging will have to segregate and manage the waste generated in accordance with Municipal Solid Waste Rules 2000, said GHMC authorities.

"Every plastic bag manufacturing unit must register with the GHMC and pay the Plastic Waste Management fee as prescribed by the Urban Local Body. Registered shops will have to display at prominent places that plastic carry bags will be given only on payment.

Only registered shopkeepers / street vendors shall be eligible to provide plastic carry bags. Commercial establishments should not sell or provide commodities to consumer in carry bags or plastic sheets or multilayered packaging which are not manufactured and labelled or marked, as prescribed in the rules.
