Hyderabad: According to a study conducted by the EPTRI (Environment Protection Training and Research Institute), no major environmental concern was found in the proposed Kaleshwaram project, comprising barrages at Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla.

It may be mentioned here that the State government entrusted the EPTRI to prepare a report on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Management Plan (EMP) on Kaleswaram project. The report is likely to be submitted to Centre in a month to seek the final stage - 2 environmental clearances for the project.

Top officials told The Hans India that the study had been completed and the institute was giving finishing touches to the report which would be submitted to the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests.

The impact of the project on sanctuaries, archeological structures, wildlife and endangered species has been studied in detail all through the project site. Since the project and the barrages are being constructed all along the river Godavari, the officials said the intensity of the environmental affects under the giant project was minimal. No major habitation (either human or wildlife) was found to have affected badly.

The submergence of the areas near the proposed 10 reservoirs, mainly Mallannasagar, Baswapuram, Kondapochamma, Gaandimalla , Anantagiri and Mambad, was also studied. Relief and Rehabilitation (R&R) of the displaced and the conservation of flora and fauna have been taken into consideration and the necessary steps would be taken.

The Union Ministry already accorded stage 1 clearances to the project by earmarking nearly 3,000 acres of forest land for the construction of Kaleshwaram project. In the stage -2 clearance, the government would have to submit a report on EIA and EMP study to the Ministry. Based on the report, the Centre would conduct a final survey and accord all environment related clearances to the project.

Officials said the public hearing on land acquisition was also completed. A total of 60,000 acres of land was already acquired for the the project.

The remaining 20,000 acres would be acquired soon, the said. The acquisition of land was pending only at the proposed Mallanna Sagar reservoir where 80 per cent of the required land was already procured.
Officials said the State government and EPTRI would hold a high-level meeting and review the report thoroughly before submitting it to the Union Ministry.
