Shalibanda: The road-widening works from Himmatpura in Shalibanda to Fateh Darwaza hit road block allegedly due to delay of authorities in acquisition of about 30 properties on the stretch. The demolition works which were taken up in 2018 came to a grinding halt.

According to officials, with road-widening of about 2 km stretch being under taken by GHMC aimed to provide a better connectivity to the important localities of Shalibanda to Hussaini Alam via Fateh Darwaza, bypassing the Charminar and even Chowmohallah palace and Murgi Chowk. A total of 165 properties were acquired and the demolitions began in 2018. While most of the properties were demolished some of them are getting delayed owing to delay of compensation through cheques. Once the property owners get compensation the work on the entire stretch will be cleared for road-widening.

Speaking on the delay of works on road-widening, Mohammed Ahmed, Vice President Minority Cell, TDP, Charminar, said, “The 80 per cent of the demolition works were completed for the road widening. Starting from Shalibanda to Hussaini Alam via Fateh Darwaza, several demolition works were pending. A total of 35 property owners are not ready to vacate the land and the GHMC had been neglecting this issue for months and works was stopped for 4 past months,” said Mohammed Ahmed.

He also said that, “Some of the properties in area belong to government which was encroached upon 1990s and the structures were built on the land. The three properties at Himmatpura in Shalibanda are encroached, where there was a government toilet. After the encroachment many representations were given to the higher officials regarding the land by locals and in 2007 eviction notice were also issued by Bahadurpura MRO. In 2017, GHMC issued a notice to vacate the property for the road-widening works in area. But since then the property owners are not ready to vacate and the works of road-widening stopped,” he added.

In February, a representation was also given by a resident, Hussain Bin Mohamed Barawaz to the government regarding the road-widening works. He emphasised that the works were pending due to the non-cooperation of three property owners who allegedly had encroached the government land and now not ready to vacate it developmental project. “The officials need to take immediate action against the property owners who not only encroached upon the government land, but also not vacating for road-widening works,” Ahmed said.

Ironically, the activists have pointed out that one of the property owners who were compensated by the authorities for 250 sq yards from his 350 sq yards did not vacate the land. “Rather letting the portion of land for road widening, he now started constructing a structure on total land at the expense of GHMC. The officers should take note of the issue, if they are aware,” added Ahmed.

Despite repeated attempts to contact GHMC officials concerned over the matter and progress of the road widening, there was no response.
