OpenAI has officially expanded its Codex platform to Windows PCs, significantly widening access to its AI-powered coding assistant beyond Mac devices. The latest update also strengthens mobile integration, allowing users to remotely monitor and manage Codex tasks directly from the ChatGPT app on Android and iOS devices.

The company first introduced remote Codex support for Macs in May through the ChatGPT mobile application. With the newest rollout, Windows users can now access the same capabilities, bringing AI-assisted development features to one of the world’s most widely used desktop operating systems.

One of the key additions is the new “Computer Use” functionality. According to OpenAI, this feature allows Codex to directly interact with the Windows graphical interface by viewing the screen and carrying out actions such as clicking buttons, typing text, opening applications, navigating menus, and adjusting settings.

The feature is aimed at workflows that cannot be completed through terminal commands or software integrations alone. These include testing desktop applications, reproducing interface-specific bugs, browsing the web, and accessing software tools that do not offer dedicated API support.

On Windows systems, Computer Use operates directly on the active desktop and temporarily takes control of the foreground while tasks are running. This enables Codex to interact with applications in a manner similar to a human operator.

OpenAI has also expanded Codex’s remote access functionality for Windows devices. Users can now start, monitor, and manage tasks running on a connected Windows PC using the ChatGPT mobile app or another supported desktop system.

The remote interface reflects the live state of the connected machine, including running tasks, project contexts, approvals, plugins, and outputs. Users can review test results, switch AI models, submit additional instructions, and approve actions without physically accessing the original computer.

Importantly, OpenAI clarified that files, credentials, permissions, and local configurations remain stored on the host device. The mobile app essentially functions as a remote-control dashboard, delivering live updates such as screenshots, terminal activity, code changes, and test results.

The company added that Codex can send approval notifications to connected devices whenever user authorization is required. This capability is expected to help developers manage lengthy coding, debugging, and testing workflows while away from their workstations.

Apart from Windows support, OpenAI has introduced a redesigned Profile section within the ChatGPT app. The updated section displays account information, usage statistics, and token activity in a more detailed format.

Additional improvements include enhanced thread coordination for local projects and worktrees, better search functionality for previous Codex conversations, as well as overall performance optimizations and bug fixes.

The latest expansion highlights OpenAI’s broader push to make AI-assisted software development more flexible and platform-independent. By combining desktop interaction with remote mobile management, Codex is moving beyond traditional code generation and becoming a more active development assistant capable of handling real-world graphical workflows across devices.
