Roundtable calls for caste census, greater representation of BCs
Peddapalli: Speakers at a round-table meeting in the city on Thursday called for a caste census to establish the population and representation of OBCs, while urging the community to intensify its efforts for social and political empowerment.
The meeting was organised by the Bahujan Democratic Forum under the chairmanship of its founder-president Thaduri Srimannarayana.
National Jyotirao Phule Satyashodhak Samaj president K Murali Manohar said the lack of accurate data on OBC communities was affecting their representation in education, politics, employment and economic development.
He demanded that the Centre conduct a caste census and assign a caste code to every community.
The speakers alleged that OBCs were being denied their rightful share and urged them to move away from a “mindset of subordination” and strengthen their movement for social and political rights.
They recalled the contribution of backward communities in the Telangana movement and called for greater representation in governance.
Representatives of BC and caste organisations, students, employees, teachers and workers participated in the meeting and pledged to continue their campaign for caste enumeration and adequate representation.
