Vijayawada: Students should take the lead in reducing electronic waste and protecting the environment by adopting responsible practices in the use and disposal of electronic gadgets, Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) Chairman P Krishnaiah has said.
Addressing students at an awareness programme on ‘Let us reduce electronic waste and protect the environment’ organised at Stella College here on Friday, he said the rapid growth in the use of mobile phones, computers, televisions, batteries and other electronic devices had resulted in a corresponding increase in electronic waste.
He cautioned that discarded and damaged electronic equipment, when dumped indiscriminately, could release hazardous substances and contaminate air, soil and water, posing serious threats to human health and the environment. Improper disposal of e-waste had become a growing environmental concern and required collective responsibility, he added.
Krishnaiah emphasised three important principles to tackle the problem — reduce, repair and reuse. He advised students to avoid unnecessary purchases of electronic gadgets, extend the life of existing devices through timely repairs and ensure that unusable equipment was handed over for proper recycling rather than being thrown away.
Mohammed Fathima also participated in the programme and explained the importance of environmental protection. P Srinivas, Environment Engineer, urged students to handle electronic waste responsibly and contribute to effective waste management in their localities.
Stella College Degree Vice-Principal Dr S Asha, Chemistry Department Head Dr S Vanilatha, Botany Department Head T Kiranmayi, faculty members and students attended the programme.
