Vijayawada: The percentage of death among pregnant women affected by Covid-19 in foreign countries is very high, said noted gynecologist Dr K Prabha Devi while addressing the health education programme online at Vasavya Nursing Home with Dr G Samaram in the chair here on Saturday. Dr Prabha Devi said that Covid-19 affect on the pregnant women is more since they have low immunity.

In the Indian context, the pregnant women are staying home safely due to the lockdown and are not being affected, she said. However, the affects of Covid-19 on the pregnant women or the new born babies is not clear since it started spreading recently. The virus was found in placenta but it was not sure how far it reaches the foetus.

So far it was not proved that the Covid-19 caused abortion, premature delivery or stunted growth of foetus or difficulty in delivery, she said. She could even breastfeed the child but after taking some precautions. It was not proved that the virus would be passed down to the baby through breastfeeding.
