Today is International Stage Management Day: The art of making every performance work
In Short
Explore the vital role of stage management in theatre and productions, covering planning, rehearsal coordination, and essential leadership skills for students.

The art of making every performance work
A successful stage performance involves more than actors, costumes, lights and dialogue. Behind every smooth production is a stage management team that keeps people, preparations and technical elements working together. Stage management is the process of organising and coordinating the different aspects of a performance, from rehearsals to the final curtain call.
A stage manager acts as a link between the director, actors, backstage crew and technical team. The role requires planning, communication, attention to detail and the ability to respond calmly when something unexpected happens.
Stage management begins well before the performance day. The team helps prepare rehearsal schedules, records the director’s instructions, tracks props and costumes, and ensures that everyone knows their responsibilities. During rehearsals, stage managers note changes in movement, dialogue, entrances and exits so that the production remains consistent.
Skills students can develop
Stage management offers students an opportunity to develop skills that are useful both on stage and beyond it. Organising rehearsals and meeting deadlines build time-management skills, while coordinating different teams strengthens communication and leadership. Handling last-minute changes also encourages problem-solving and teamwork.
Students interested in theatre, dance, music, cultural festivals or school events can gain practical experience by volunteering backstage. They can begin with simple tasks such as maintaining a prop list, helping with seating arrangements, checking microphones or coordinating performers before they enter the stage.
