The University of Hyderabad (UoH) has been granted an Indian patent for a topical platform being developed to explore a multipurpose approach to sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention, inflammation management and contraception. Indian Patent No. 602689 was granted on September 16, 2026. The patent covers methods and compositions involving lactoferrin nanoparticles loaded with curcumin and combined with antiretroviral drugs, including efavirenz, tenofovir or dapivirine.

The approach uses lactoferrin, a naturally occurring protein, as a nanoparticle-based delivery vehicle for local vaginal administration. The patented formulations are designed to combine antiviral and anti-inflammatory components, while also exploring the contraceptive potential of curcumin. According to the research described in the patent, laboratory and animal studies have provided evidence supporting further investigation of the formulations. The nanoparticles demonstrated controlled, pH-dependent drug release and sustained antiviral activity. The studies also reported compatibility with Lactobacillus, a group of bacteria associated with vaginal health, along with increased local drug availability following vaginal administration.

The reported animal studies further indicated lower systemic absorption of the drugs compared with corresponding soluble formulations and reduced tissue damage under the conditions tested. The technology represents an effort to develop a single locally administered platform that could potentially address multiple reproductive-health requirements. Rather than relying on separate approaches for infection prevention, inflammation and contraception, the researchers are examining whether these functions can be brought together through a nanoparticle-based formulation.

The patent provides intellectual-property protection for the specified compositions and methods. Further research and validation would be required to establish their safety, effectiveness and potential clinical applications.
