Karnataka Congress will set up political affairs committee soon: Hariprasad

Bengaluru: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president B.K. Hariprasad on Saturday said the party would constitute a Political Affairs Committee in the state shortly to improve coordination between the organisation and the government.

Speaking to reporters near the KPCC office, Hariprasad said Political Affairs Committees were functioning in other states and Karnataka would also have one soon. He said AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal and Karnataka Congress in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala had recently directed the state leadership to complete the process at the earliest.

“We are preparing for it. I have already sought suggestions and views from senior leaders. After taking their opinions into account, the committee will be constituted soon,” Hariprasad said. He also welcomed the state Cabinet’s decision to accord Tulu the status of a second additional official language in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. The decision was taken at a special Cabinet meeting in Mangaluru on Friday.

Hariprasad said Tulu had a rich literary and cultural history and recalled discussions during his parliamentary tenure on including Tulu and Kodava in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. He then launched a sharp political attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning the Union government’s approach to public sector enterprises and accusing it of pursuing religion-based politics.

Hariprasad said Karnataka had several public sector undertakings established under Congress-led governments and alleged that the Modi government had sold 26 public sector enterprises. He also criticised the use of religion in political mobilisation, saying religious practices should remain matters of personal faith and should not be brought into political disputes.
