Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy
Hyderabad: Describing education in Telangana as being “in the ICU” and requiring immediate attention, the Telangana People’s Front (TPF) urged Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to take three urgent decisions to strengthen the education sector.
In a letter to the Chief Minister on Wednesday, former IAS officers Akunuri Murali, Dr. MV Reddy, Champalal and Prof. Padmaja Shaw said TPF members and activists undertook the “Badi Kosam–Bus Yatra” across the ten erstwhile Telangana districts from September 15 to 29.
The team visited 20 government schools, several private schools, held 10 round-table conferences and public meetings in 13 villages and urban settlements. It also organised “Badi Nidra”, spending nights in 10 government schools, while interacting with parents, teachers, villagers and local representatives. Based on the feedback, the TPF demanded a law regulating private school fees, comprehensive strengthening of existing government schools through the Telangana Public Schools (TPS) programme and legislation to institutionalise it. It also demanded a law mandating that at least 18% of the State’s annual budget be allocated to education.
The TPF said existing government schools, colleges and universities must be strengthened alongside new institutions. It stressed that education should receive the highest and most urgent priority to make Telangana a knowledge-based society and a model State.
