Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner, M Dana Kishore, on Friday said that they were planning to set up large scale compost units in Greater Hyderabad.

The Commissioner chaired a meeting with the officials concerned separately at GHMC headquarters. GHMC additional commissioner Shruthi Ojha, solid waste management officials, Water Board executive director Satyanarayana, director Vijaykumar Reddy were present at the meeting.

At the meeting, the Commissioner said GHMC decided to construct the plants from which they can make compost fertilisers and also produce electricity from around 100 metric tonnes of wastage from modern animal shelters, slaughter houses located at Amberpet, Jiyaguda, New Bhoiguda and other areas which come under the limits of GHMC.

GHMC has also decided to set up a power generating plant from the waste liquid emits from Jawaharnagar dump yard, he said. For the construction of these plants GHMC would be using the knowledge shared by the Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) from Mumbai, he added. He informed that BARC had submitted proposals to GHMC to construct the compost fertilizer and plant to generate power from waste from slaughter houses at a competitive price.

He instructed the officials of solid waste management of GHMC to prepare the proposal and submit it about constructing the units which can produce power and compost fertilizer from waste which comes from slaughter houses. "To purify the liquid waste from 339 acres of Jawaharnagar dump yard, we are spending Rs 11 crore," he said.
