Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is all set to take up a special drive to eliminate plastic items from May 12 to 31, as part of its 'My Fitness-City Fitness' programme.

The civic body is also considering a proposal to prepare dustbins from the collected plastic items by recycling them and selling them at thoroughfares in the city. The programme will be launched on a big scale on Sunday.

Organisers of various gyms in the limits of deputy commissioners and practitioners are to be invited to the programme. A special drive will be taken up from May 17 to repair 15,000 water harvesting plants that are built by GHMC at government offices.

The announcement to this effect was made by GHMC Commissioner M Dana Kishore here on Wednesday, while addressing a review meeting on 'Saaf Hyderabad-Shaandaar Hyderabad' at Salar Jung Museum. The District Collectors of Charminar and Kukatpally, medical officers, location officers and representatives of NGOs attended the meeting.

Dana Kishore said that a target has been set, as part of the special drive, to collect 5 to 8 tonnes of plastic from each circle by June 5, which is also the World Environmental Day. He said the Swachh auto rickshaws have to collect 100% garbage from every house.

The GHMC chief suggested that saplings could be planted at open garbage points, in order to prevent dumping of garbage at those points. He stressed that self-discipline on 'Swacchta' should be inculcated among owners and residents.
